Here is an icebreaker question for your family to open the discussion.
If someone, who did not know you, came to your house and observed your family for a day, how would they describe your family to others?

Read It
Ephesians 5:21-6:4
Have everyone in the family contribute to reading this out loud. Maybe Dad reads the first 6 verses, Mom reads the next 6, and the kids split up the last 5. Just try and get everyone involved.

Unpack It
What things did Jesus do for the church? As our leader what example did Jesus set while here on earth? After discussing this, make a list of what you came up and write them down on a separate piece of paper for everyone to see.

What would it look like if everyone subjected themselves to one another in the fear of Christ? Who would be the leaders and who would be the followers?

How does a man love his wife like Jesus loves the Church? Moment of truth Dad. Don’t give simple answers. Dig deep and give real, personal examples.

How does a woman respect her husband? Does that mean a woman can’t have an opinion, a thought of her own, have a leadership role in the family, or does this statement go deeper than that? Is this statement more about the weaknesses both men and women have?

Ok kids. You don’t get off the hook. Why does God remind kids that they need to obey their parents? What effects does a child’s disrespect have on a family? What repercussions will it have on a child’s relationship with God?

Apply It
How can we be a family that loves, respects, and obeys one another? How can we live so that the words people use to describe our family match up with those given in our description of Jesus?
