- Have you been married less than 2 years?
- Would you like to enjoy a life-long successful marriage?
- Do you have 2 hours once a month to meet with another couple?
- Do you hate it when you get a new item and it is in a vacuum packed plastic package that takes a chainsaw to open?
Ok that last point is just me venting. But in all seriousness here at The Creek we are concerned about the health and stability of marriage in a divorce-prone society. In the US, 20% of all first marriages are disrupted by either separation or divorce in the first five years of marriage. After 10 years, 33% of all first marriages are disrupted by either separation or divorce.[1] As a congregation we are engaging in proactive ways to help couples build and nurture stronger marriages. We use the Marriage Mentoring: 12 Conversations program developed by Dr. Ed Gray of Harding University. The program is pretty simple. Couples meet monthly for one year as they develop a friendship over guided conversations about marriage. They meet in a relaxed atmosphere that they choose, say over coffee or dinner to discuss topics about marriage with a corresponding list of suggested questions from the mentoring conversations guide. Both couples will share their stories about their marriage’s strengths, joys, memories, differences, challenges, and problem-solving skills. Marriage mentoring offers practical support to couples seeking to lay a solid foundation to build their marriage upon.
