A spiritual discipline is an activity that an individual pursues in order to achieve a goal. They are not simply “things Christians do.” They are not just “to do” items that must be checked off in order to make it to heaven. Spiritual disciplines are tools that accomplish specific objectives.

Prayer helps individuals develop a relationship with God.  Reading the Bible helps individuals increase in knowledge of God and how He interacts with Creation. Silence helps individuals discern promptings from God. Strategic planning helps individuals pursue spiritual growth with intentionality.  Spiritual Disciplines are the Christian’s most important tools.

The pursuit of spiritual disciplines is an essential strategy for reflecting Christ more clearly:   ·

  • Knowledge – Read the Bible and spend time listening to God through prayer, silence, and fasting. Memorize Bible verses that can be used in everyday experiences and activities.

  • Attitudes – Reflect on your attitudes by journaling and compare them with what you see modeled in the Bible. Establish a Peer-Accountability relationship that can give you objective feedback about how your attitudes are perceived.

  • Priorities – Develop a Personal Life & Growth Plan and spend time journaling to evaluate how well your behaviors and allocation of resources match your espoused priorities. Read the Bible to learn what it means to have God-honoring priorities.

  • Behaviors – Read the Bible and reflect on behaviors that you want to start as well as those that you want to change and stop. Use your Personal Life & Growth plan to make those goals concrete and use your Peer-Accountability relationship as a source of encouragement.

  • Relationships – Pursue prayer, Bible study, and silence to develop a relationship with God. Use your Personal Life & Growth Plan to identify key relationships in your life and set goals for how you can become God-honoring in relation to each.
