Elijah: A Man of Faith - Week 6
Week 6 - Discussion Guide
Describe a time in your life where you transitioned from one thing to the next. Was it a good or bad transition? Why or why not? What were your feelings during that time?
What stood out to you from this sermon? How did this message deepen your faith?
Read 1 Kings 19:9-18.
Why do you think Elijah went to Mt. Horeb? What is significant about Mt. Horeb? What is the context surrounding his going to this mountain?
How do times of getting away to be with God help us discern God’s will for our lives? How have you experienced God’s leading by spending time alone with Him?
Read 1 Kings 19:19-21.
What characteristics in Elijah helped him succeed in transitioning the role of prophet to Elisha? Why was he fine with passing his authority on to Elisha?
What characteristics or qualities about Elisha’s willingness to learn from, apprectice under, and be discipled by Elijah stand out to you?
Read 2 Kings 2:1-14.
In this sermon, Gary talked about two exits – the temporal exits we encounter in life and an eternal exit. How does our eternal exit shape how we view temporal ones?
How does Jesus show portray for us a better Elijah? In what ways can we follow his leading for how we engage those around us in the world?
For people like Moses and Elijah, they both had a place (Mt. Horeb) where they encountered God’s presence. Do you have any particular place like that for you? How have you heard God speak during your times of being with Him?
Do you have a specific mission that God has called you to like he did with Elijah? If so, what is it? If not, what is the general mission of God that he has called all followers of Jesus to embark on?
What are things that you encounter that keep you away from fulfilling the mission God has called you to? How can your community best help you to accomplish what God’s will is in your life?
This week pray that God would open your eyes to see the idols you have in your life and that He would help you rid yourself of them so that you can be a fully devoted follower of Christ.
From the highest of highs to the lowest of lows, there is one thing that remained constant that we can learn from Elijah today: he was faithful through it all. That is something that, despite our circumstances, we can learn from him today. But to do that, we need help.
To go deeper in your relationship with God and others, here are some next steps for you:
